Jerry's backpedal comes too late...

I couldn't believe my ears or eyes when I saw and heard the Jerry Jones comment to Chris Mortenson on the Dez Bryant ankle injury.

On Friday, following Bryant's injury, Jones brought up the possibility the receiver may have been worn down from heaving training camp work, making him susceptible to an injury.

What?

How about throwing your coaches under the bus and then pampering a rookie before he's ever caught a pass.

I guarantee you some coaches did a double-take when they heard those comments.

I know Bryant is a great talent and a first-round pick, but---come on, he's still a rookie. Overworked, are you serious?

On Saturday, didn't change his comments but tried to clarify that he wasn't questioning his coaches.

"I'm not being critical," Jones said after Saturday morning's practice. "What I'm being is analytical, or trying to be analytical.

"This is when you all sit down and look at everything you're doing and see if there's some things you can do to help protect your team better, especially during this time five to six weeks away from the opening game."

Jerry, you jumped the gun, you jumped your coaches, and you're pampering another wide receiver.

Back from Camp, ready for the long and fun stretch...

Drove back from Cowboys Training Camp on Friday, co-hosted a remote with Butch Henry from Gatesville promoting their Rodeo and now catching up from being gone for a few days.

Got a lot done around my place this weekend, trying to actually make it look like someone lives here, pictures, etc. Not sure my neighbor has been thrilled with a little hammer noise here and there, but I did everything during the afternoon.

I spent most of Saturday night visiting, prospecting and talking with potential and current sponsors, including my first trip to Diamondback's, a very nice steakhouse.

Account Executive Terry Tacker served as my host for 3-4 stops...I think we made progress on a few additional on-site appearances.

Right now, we're pushing three specific sponsorships, including the Cowboys game broadcasts, our weekly analyst segments (Brad Sham, Jay Ratliff, Mickey Spagnola, Tim MacMahon, Jennifer Floyd-Engel, Big 12 Hour), and of course---our high school football broadcasts and scoreboard show.

I got a full night sleep on Friday night, watching SportsCenter right now, another very nice win for the Rangers, winning 2-1 in Anaheim and it was so nice to see Rich Harden put a good outing together.

If he gets it together with Lee, Wilson, and Lewis pitching well...no one will catch the Rangers in the AL West. They may not do that even if he doesn't pitch well.

I'm contemplating a round of golf on Sunday, but might just chill out throughout the day.

Wrapping up Cowboys Camp Coverage

I think we're coming back for another day or two in San Antonio next week, but we're done for the first week. Been here since last Thursday, enjoyed the time, I hope everyone enjoyed the coverage.

These are the kind of special events we want to do, and do them quite frequently.

Thanks again to our sponsors of this coverage:

Salty Dog
Fuddrucker's
First National Bank of Central Texas
Mercedes-Benz of Waco
La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant & Cantina
Boozer's Jeweler's

Special thanks to those who helped along the way, including Butch Henry, Producer-Tony Loomer, Beth Richards for all the work on the podcast link and the photo gallery and Marcel Van Es for his work with the professional photography, Zach for his work with all the promos, production and putting up with me learning----yes, I learned how to use Adobe Audition.

Also, Graham-Man from 104.9TheBeat and his partner "Sanchez."

And, Paul Catalina has been out on vacation in California, but he busted it before he left so I wouldn't have a lot of the tedious paperwork to deal with while gone or when I return.

Here are just some of the players we interviewed throughout the week:

Bradie James, Terence Newman, Anthony Spencer, Jay Ratliff, Stephen Bowen, Sean Lee, Alan Ball, Marcus Spears, WR Coach Ray Sherman, OC Jason Garrett, and the daily Wade Phillips press conference audio.

Baylor Football Single-Game Tickets On Sale Aug. 2

Waco, Texas – Single-game tickets for Baylor’s six-game 2010 home schedule will go on sale Monday, Aug. 2, at 8 a.m. Fans may purchase tickets online at baylorbears.com, in person at the Baylor Athletic Ticket Office in the Ferrell Center or by calling 254.710.1000.

Baylor will host six home games this fall at Floyd Casey Stadium beginning with Sam Houston State on Sept. 4. Other games include: Buffalo (Parents’ Weekend, Sept. 11), Kansas (Oct. 2), Kansas State (Homecoming, Oct. 23), Texas A&M (Nov. 13) and Oklahoma (Nov. 20).

Kickoff times for the Bears’ games against both Sam Houston State and Buffalo have been set for 6 p.m., while start times for the remaining contests will be established as the Big 12 television partners make their selections six to 12 days in advance of the game.

For the first time on baylorbears.com, fans looking to purchase tickets to all Baylor Parents’ Weekend and Homecoming activities will be able to do so when purchasing their football tickets for those games. Parents’ Weekend activities include After Dark and Dinner on the Grounds, while Pigskin Revue is always a Homecoming highlight each fall.

Tickets to the 2010 Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Shoot at the historic Cotton Bowl, Oct. 9, between Baylor and Texas Tech, are also still available. Tickets are priced at $90, $60 and $40 each, and groups of 20 or more may take $10 off the $60 and $40 price-points. Baylor students may purchase two tickets for this game for $25 each. All tickets include admission to the State Fair of Texas on both Oct. 8 and 9.

While single-game tickets go on-sale Aug. 2, there is still time for Baylor fans to purchase their 2010 season football tickets, too. Super Fan season tickets for sections A, K and Q may be purchased for $150 each for adults and $115 for youth (age 18 and under). The ever-popular season Family 4 Pack is available for $320, and includes four tickets in the North End Zone to every Baylor home game, which works out to $80 per person for the season or $13.33 per person, per game.

Baylor Athletics also offers groups of 15 or more the ability to purchase tickets to home games for as little as $20 each (Texas A&M and Oklahoma games are excluded). Questions about group tickets may be directed to Baylor Athletic Marketing at 254.710.8110.

In 2009, Baylor recorded its best season football ticket sale since 1999, and 2010 sales are running 2,000 ahead of this same point a year ago, according to school officials.

TPC San Antonio

Channel 8 sportscaster Joe Trahan invited me to play a round of golf at the TPC-San Antonio where they hosted the Valero Texas Open earlier this year.

It's a J.W. Marriott property and it's absolutely beautiful.

Joe, R.J. Choppy of ESPN Radio in Dallas, Channel 11's Steve Dennis and I all teed off this morning at 7:35am and we all want another piece of the course.

It was fantastic, but very difficult. Greens were as fast as I've played on and the hardest part were the subtle, but deadly undulations around the greens.

I'm a 5-handicapper but I didn't have much of a chance today, shot 87 and I was proud of it.

Steve Dennis had the best score, 85....and he's very good, so are Joe and R.J. but we all had our problems.

We should have known when the starter off the #1 tee box told us, "Gentlemen, just a couple of things to think about...don't over-read the breaks on the greens, and be careful if you're just off the fairways in some of the higher grass."

We all asked, "Why?"

He answered, "Well, we have a lot of snakes, scorpions and tarantulas, so be careful---but have fun!"

I think it took us about 5-6 holes to get over the fear...had a great time, but want to get another shot at the course down the road.

A little down-time on Thursday morning...

About to leave the 'Dome after another good day.

I loved today's show because we had several calls, great guests----and even Butch noticed where the calls were coming from---throughout greater-Central Texas.

I'm going to relax tonight, about to try and catch the Rangers at some sports bar.

I have a 7:35am tee-time at TPC San Antonio with R.J. Choppy, Joe Trahan and Steve Dennis.

I better hit 'em straight, those guys can play.

High School Football Workouts begin on Monday...

I'm already lining up some coaches for the show on Monday and throughout two-a-days.

Already confirmed, China Spring's Mark Bell, Monday, August 2nd, 5:15pm.

Monday, August 9th, Midway's Terry Gambill, sometime between 3pm-6pm.

Smoaky

We'll polish off the chili after practice today...

My media brethren and some players will finish off whatever is left of the chili/beans from Monday's cookout.

I think we'll get Pro Bowl nose tackle Jay Ratliff on the show today, among others.

Quiet around the Alamodome this morning, rookies only with 1-2 veterans there...but not much there, rookies running around with their heads cut off.

David Smoak

About the time I thought Coach Wade was tougher...

Enjoyed a nice dinner with Graham, Sanchez and my son-Craig last night. Went to "Howl at the Moon" a piano bar afterward, that place rocks.

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips talked about the training camp "grind" during his Tuesday press conference...and how the players needed to deal with it.

This morning, basically all veterans given the morning off.

Huh?

Veteran defensive tackle Stephen Bowen was at practice only because most of the rookie DL are hurt.

"SHOULD" be a better and more physical practice this afternoon...at least I hope so.

San Antonio Memories

I live in San Antonio on two different occasions, once for my 6th and 7th grade years, and then after four years in Japan, we returned to San Antonio right before my senior year in high school.

I attended Universal City Randolph H.S. on the Air Force Base and loved it, played for the great Bob Mickler, among the best coaches in Texas H.S. Football history. He's among the top 25-30 in all-time wins, and among the best in winning-percentage.

I have always loved San Antonio, think it's a very underrated city. I was having lunch with a friend today who mentioned something about San Antonio and how they couldn't believe how big it was----it's very large, and spreading out on the edges.

San Antonio is a Spurs town, but I heard Jerry Jones also mention 97% of all NFL fans in San Antonio are Cowboys fans.

I also have some emotional memories here as well, my longtime friend, Col. Greg Brodman is buried at the National Cemetery at Fort Sam Houston, as is his wife, Diane.

Greg died suddenly in 2005 of a heart attack, and I'll never forget receiving the call about what happened.

His wife, Diane died a couple of years ago.

Some Home-Boys join the fray...

Edward Graham(Man) and Edward Sanchez from our own 104.9TheBest came to camp today to get some pictures and enjoy the atmosphere.

And, Marcel Van Es is here to take a lot of pictures...unlike what I have, he has legitimate photography skills.

We'll try and get some pictures up on the site later today.

Marcel's wife, Beth, is part of "Dustin and Beth" on Mix92.9FM.

Only with the Cowboys...

can a kid not carrying a pair of shoulder pads become such a hot topic.

And, as a talk show host, I love it.

Personally, I don't care.

I do think Dez is playing a little mind game with Roy, who I think everyone would agree is a little emotional wobbly.

Monday, July 26th...

We'll have LB Anthony Spencer, LT Doug Free and we'll also have John Morris live from the Big 12 Media Day coverage in Dallas.

And, Jennifer Floyd-Engel of the FW Star-Telegram.

There's a rumor going around...

There's a rumor going around that some sportscaster from Waco is cooking-up a large pot of his chili and beans for the media and some players.

College coaches at Cowboys Camp

I spoke with Baylor head coach Art Briles during Saturday's practice and ran into Ray Woodard, the head football coach at Lamar University on Sunday.

Woodard once starred at the University of Texas, and was the head coach at Navarro College before taking the job to renew the football program at Lamar in Beaumont.

He mentioned they have accepted transfer Adren Dorsey, the DT who was released from the Texas A&M program. Dorsey's brother, Ashton is at UT, both played at John Tyler High School.

Sunday's 2nd Practice Nuggets

I don't sit there and watch every single play during the various drills, and maybe it was me but I saw a few dropped passes today and not just by Roy Williams.

Cowboys wrapped-up their first actual two-a-days and have just the one practice on Monday.

I was able to record interviews with rookie LB Sean Lee, outside linebacker Anthony Spencer and inside linebacker Bradie James this weekend to replay during the week.

Yes, I know there are other positions other than LB, those three just were available when I was recording. We'll get more players representing more positions throughout the week.

I've requested Demarcus Ware for Monday, ANOTHER LB! And, a great one at that, so we'll see.

Smoaky

Sunday Post-Practice Nuggets

Just recorded a handful of short, post-practice interviews, including wide receivers coach Ray Sherman, WR-Miles Austin, and a little bit with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

About to interview rookie linebacker Sean Lee from Penn State.

Sunday with the Cowboys

Cowboys have two workouts today, and that will allow me to gather a couple of more interviews to air this coming week during our coverage from the Alamodome.

I'm headed downstairs to watch practice and get some post-practice audio as well.

Right now, they're running 11-on-11 which has a lot of action.

Just interviewed Cowboys LB Anthony Spencer

While the rest of the media pack was running around like fire ants catching this player or that one, I recorded a 10-minute interview with Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer.

He played very well last season and I'll have his interview during Monday's show from here in San Antonio.

David Smoak

Art Briles, among others at Cowboys 1st practice...

Baylor football coach Art Briles was in attendance at the Cowboys first workout inside the Alamodome.

Briles spent a lot of time talking with Bum Phillips, Wade's father and enjoying a little football.

Finally, a practice in San Antonio

Cowboys are on the practice field, early drills include all special teams.

Large crowd on hand to watch the opening practice.

There was 22,500 at the Friday night "Kickoff Party" here at the Alamodome.

There's a rhyme and reason for all the drills they do and at times, yes--it can be boring as you know what but it's all about leading up to the regular season.

Cowboys will practice only once today, twice on Sunday.

On the radio side of things, we have a "Wish List" that I give each year to Jancy Briles in the Media Relations Department. I've been fortunate over the years to work with some great people who usually deliver what I've asked for including guests.

I'll try and gather 2-3 recorded interviews throughout the weekend that we can build our shows around this Monday through Thursday, plus---we'll keep adding others along the way next week.

There are 4-5 radio stations broadcasting from up here in the press box, including two from Dallas, one from my old station in Tyler, and 1660ESPN Radio.

Training Camp Memories...

Well, we're settled into San Antonio. I love this city, always have...went to school here in 6th and 7th grades at Ed White Middle School in the early-70's, and then transferred from Japan to Randolph AFB and Randolph High School for my senior season.

Enjoyed a busy show on Thursday afternoon with several guests and some great callers as well and now pumped-up about covering another Cowboys Training Camp.

Of course, if I had my choice---their little trip later in August in Oxnard, California would've been my preference---but, that's for another day and perhaps next summer.

There are a lot more media types who've covered more Cowboys Training Camps than I have, but I do remember my first back in 1986 or '87 when they were training in Thousand Oaks, California.

My favorite memory was the first-ever live sportscast we launched via Satellite on KLTV-Channel 7. I was the sports director and Roger Wallace (now working in Austin) was our weeknight sports anchor.

After we went live and got word from Tyler the sportscast was flawless---Roger and I started acting like two little school girls, screaming up and down the parking lot area on the Cal-Lutheran Campus.

We broke new ground that night and now, television stations broadcasting live from throughout the world is no big deal.

But, I'll never take that memory or the live shots for granted.

My first time broadcasting radio from a Cowboys Camp was in July, 1990 when the Cowboys first moved to St. Edwards University in Austin.

I remember vividly upon returning to East Texas after a week of live broadcasts how a client told me, "I knew you were going to accomplish great things when I heard you live from Cowboys Camp last week."

This summer, I'm here at camp with 1660ESPN Radio, Waco and what a difference a year makes. I was here last summer but it came during a time when I was trying to figure out my life.

I thought about that quite a bit on my drive down from Waco tonight.

I'm honored to be down here again and doing what I love to do.

I hope everyone will enjoy the coverage we'll bring starting on Friday and running through next Thursday.

Clarifying "lack of local coverage."

Thanks again for the nice email and text messages that are pouring in since I arrived in Waco on June 22nd.

As I mentioned before, we've accomplished quite a bit in a relatively short amount of time.

We'll start to seriously focus on our local high school football coverage and programming when I return from San Antonio.

Meanwhile, I'd like to clear the air or clarify a couple of complaints I received about our so-called, "lack of enough local coverage."

I appreciate any and all constructive criticism, but "lack of enough local coverage," is a bit strange to me.

Since I joined Butch Henry and Paul Catalina on "You Make The Call" we've interviewed the following local players, personalities or coaches.

*Judge Ken Starr, Baylor University President
*Art Briles, Baylor Head Football Coach
*Robert Griffin III, Baylor Quarterback
*Antonio Johnson, Baylor Linebacker
*Danny Watkins, Baylor Offensive Tackle
*Roger Goree, Former Baylor All-American Defensive End
*Grant Teaff, Former Baylor Head Coach, President-AFCA
*Scott Drew, Baylor Men's Basketball Coach (Twice)
*Kim Mulkey, Baylor Women's Basketball Coach
*David Ash, QB, Belton High School
*Rodney Southern, Head Coach, Belton High School
*Odell James, Former Baylor Quarterback
*Gary Baxter, Former Baylor Cornerback
*Nick Joos, Baylor Associate Athletic Director

Now, one call I received was our lack of coverage of the Little League, Dixie League or Youth Baseball.

I know this won't be the most popular response and philosophy, but I've dealt with trying to cover these league and games and teams for 30-plus years. My history shows you can never satisfy anyone enough while trying to cover youth sports. If you mention the Belton 8-9 year old All-Star team, you get an immediate call why you're not covering the Mart 11-12 year old All-Stars.

I would like your help (along with our own staff paying attention) keeping up with any Little League, Dixie League, or Youth League baseball team that enters a NATIONAL Tournament, especially if someone qualifies to play in Williamsport, Pa. That's a different story.

Over my 30-years in radio and television, for every one mention of a local youth team---you get hammered with 100 complaints why you didn't mention someone else.

Now, I guarantee you we will blanket the high school coverage from the start of their 2-a-day workouts in early-August through the state championship weekends in December.

We will interview players, not just coaches. And, I think you'll enjoy what we're about to do.

Thanks again.

Playing catch-up...

Just realized I haven't been on the blog since Sunday, sorry about that---been another busy and productive week.

Added a handful of new sponsors for "You Make The Call" and our Cowboys game broadcasts.

Leave for Cowboys Training Camp sometime after the show on Thursday, my son-Craig, will also be covering Camp for 99.3FM so we'll have a chance to spend some good time together.

He came in tonight to spend a day with me at 1660ESPN and I'll gather up everything we need for our coverage from San Antonio.

I dropped by W Promotions on Austin Avenue earlier on Wednesday and WOW---you should see our new van and the art work. It's absolutely fantastic and they've already produced our banners for Cowboys Camp as well.

My never-ending run of great local restaurants continued this week---more and more amazed at how much great eateries in Waco.

Well, about to head back to the house...thanks for reading and responding when you can.

Please leave any suggestions on what you want me to research and figure out at Cowboys Training Camp.

Finally, moved in...

Well, thanks to Rich and Sidney, my move into my new surroundings here in Waco went very smooth...easier than I thought considering how much hard work and time Cindy, Craig, Mike and Kyle did getting me loaded-up in Tyler.

A lot to bring with me, but the worst nightmare was a very large mahogany desk that weighed a million pounds.

Somehow, we got it loaded in Tyler and unloaded here in Waco.

I'm back at the office now, brought a lot of nice framed pictures up here to update the office.

I haven't unpacked everything at my new place, but that's for tonight.

Couldn't wait to get up to the office to get ahead for next week, a big week with our upcoming coverage at Cowboys Training Camp in San Antonio.

Zach in production, one of our up-and-coming talented prospects---did an outstanding job in producing a promo that will run for a couple of weeks.

The sales staff did a great job of believing in the coverage and selling it accordingly. I think there are some potential sponsors who still aren't quite convinced we'll be doing some of these special events, and I hope they'll join on very soon.

Bill LeGrand, our sales manager has given me the flexibility and support on a lot of the added-sponsorship we have created through not only our coverage from Cowboys Training Camp, but our weekly guest analysts sponsorships and our Cowboys game broadcasts.

Well, I need to get some grocery shopping done. I already miss my back deck in Tyler with the following options to grill, smoker, Stainless Steel Gas Grill and the always-reliable Webber Grill.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Moving Day, Weekend...

Woke up a little early again today to watch some of the British Open Championship. Looks like the weather has picked-up and the toughest chore for any broadcaster mentioning The Open will be pronouncing the leader, Louis Oosthuizen, who passed Rory McIlroy and threatening to run away with the tournament at -12.

Phil Mickelson appeared to make a move with a 33 on the front nine, but finished even through two rounds and should make the cut.

Tiger Woods started with back-to-back bogeys on 1 and 2, but is now back to -5 overall heading to the back nine.

Saturday in golf is called moving day, Friday, July 16th was semi-moving day for me as I finally got into our cozy little apartment...but the hard work comes this weekend going back to Tyler, loading up the heavy stuff and bringing it back to Waco.

Looking forward to being in my "own place," starting this weekend.

I wanted to play a round of golf, but might have to wait until Sunday.

My favorite restaurant in the world is P.F. Chang's, they don't have one in Waco but Pei Wei will do for now...enjoyed some Sweet and Sour Shrimp for lunch.

The Open Championship wore me out....

I haven't always gotten up early to watch the live coverage of The Open Championship at St. Andrews, but with Tiger Woods teeing off just after 3:00pm central time--I had my alarm set and watched his entire round, except his opening tee shot and approach shot on #1. He looked more comfortable today than in a long time, made some nice 20+-foot putts and missed a couple in the end, but he's in position to be involved.

I think Rory McIlroy is amazing...21-years old and fires a 63. I didn't get to see any of Phil Mickelson's round, but obviously he struggled with +1.

The break on the weather has always been a big factor, but it should even out when the tee times are flipped in Day 2.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit being surprised to see John Daly's start, -7 thru 11, and his finish near the top at 6-under.

I got a little second wind about mid-morning when we picked up another Cowboys Training Camp sponsor, but I'm on empty right now.

Just finished a show with Butch and Paul, Butch is headed for a well-deserved vacation, Paul starts one next Friday, and I leave for Cowboys Camp that same day.

We continue to try and win a little something good every day and keep adding to the big pie.

Uh oh, wanted to get a nice dinner, get back to my temporary home and CRASH tonight.

Just received a text from others at the station, "Hey, we're at Salty Dog--come join us."

I can't resist...I'll be there if I don't fall asleep at the wheel.

Special thanks to our "Techie" Beth Richards...

One of the first people who greeted me when I arrived at ESPN in Waco was Beth...at the time, I didn't know her from anyone else.

But, I quickly learned she wants to stay busy and loves feeding our websites.

And, like me---she wants our website to get bigger, better, faster, and stronger.

She has added links for our blogs, podcast segments, pictures, and special sections on high school and college football.

And, by the way--she's the co-host with Dustin Drew on our Adult Contemporary station, Star92.9FM. Dustin is also their program director.

Here she is...hosting the morning show but also being involved in our promotions and website.

We still have bigger plans for our website and audio-streaming, but without her help we wouldn't have anything we have up right now.

1660ESPN is now Waco's Official Dallas Cowboys Radio Station

We were committed to covering the Cowboys wall-to-wall when I arrived in late-June, but this week, we secured the rights to the Cowboys game broadcasts and additional weekly programming.

We were already committed to broadcasting live from Cowboys Training Camp in San Antonio, and we have weekly segments confirmed with Mickey Spagnola, Brad Sham, Jay Ratliff, Jennifer Floyd-Engel and Tim MacMahon to discuss the Cowboys.

Now, we're the official Cowboys affiliate in Waco and that can only take it up a notch.

This opportunity literally came out of nowhere on Monday afternoon and we're excited to add the programming to 1660ESPN Radio in Waco.

But, we're not finished, we have more on the horizon.

Rangers are officially in a slump....

I cannot believe they were swept at home by the worst team in baseball, the Orioles.

They're the only franchise I know that could screw up such a promising and positive weekend after the Cliff Lee trade.

And, welcome Cliff Lee to the Ballpark in Arlington---otherwise known as "Hell's Ballpark" for pitchers.

He'd allowed five homeruns all season and promptly gave up three on Saturday night.

Rangers couldn't get to the break soon enough, and thank goodness the Angels are in a free fall of their own.

Also, excited about a lunch setup at Ridgewood Country Club on Tuesday. And, speaking of Ridgewood, I drove to the club this afternoon after returning from Waxahachie. I met pro James Williams and he let me get a cart and drive around the grounds.

"Very nice."

Maybe I'll get a chance to play a round of ten, hint-hint?

I spent Saturday night in Waxahachie at Dale Hansen's annual bash, this time they raised nearly $100,000 for ALS. Great party, great night, great cause.

My wife Cindy, our son Craig and his girlfriend, Mandee met me in Waxahachie and we had a blast.

I traded some email with a company we're wanting to hook-up with online streaming, I wanted everything secured last week---but most everyone seemed to be taking vacation.

I hate not finishing something, trying to get that done and finalized this week.

Programming decisions, decisions, decisions...

One part of being the program director is taking calls, receiving email from numerous sources of programming.

Since we're an ESPN affiliate, we have plenty on our plate to fill the 24-hour cycle, plus the John Morris Show and our three-afternoon sports talk show.

But, it's nice to have options through various distribution centers, CBS/Westwood One has always been a solid network to use for college broadcasts and the NFL.

There are others, Sports USA, Sporting News Radio, among 10-12 others.

I always look at every option very seriously because there are some good new shows, but the hard part is telling someone "no," which I had to do today with some options in front of us.

I've never had the opportunity to run a 24/7 full-time sports station so this is exciting to have so much inventory available.

Obviously, we are committed to what we must run through ESPN, but I have a vision to one-day add another local talk show, perhaps in the morning, who knows?

BU President Judge Kenneth Starr

Looks like we might get Judge Starr on today's show in the last segment or two (between 530pm-6pm).

Not yet confirmed, but almost.

Twin Rivers...

I just returned from a really nice round at Twin Rivers Golf Course with Walter Grisham and Jim Baber, shot an 80---finished with a **** double-bogey.

Walter told me not to hit much more than a 3-iron or Hybrid on 18 and sure enough I pulled out the 3-wood and hit it right through the fairway.

It's a nice layout and the greens were in very good shape.

Really enjoyed the camaraderie and we were fortunate to avoid most of the rain.

Lots going on today with the Lebron announcement, so that should be interesting, I know most of the younger guys here at the station are all excited.

For the longest time I thought he'd be back in Cleveland, but all signs are now pointing towards a love fest with Dywane Wade and Chris Bosh.

About to call it a day...

Well, it's almost 11:00pm on a Wednesday night...about to head to the hotel.

Received a call tonight from a good friend who invited me to play Twin Rivers in the morning and meet some big-bangers from Waco.

I hope it doesn't rain. Also scheduled for Ridgewood C.C. within the next week...excited about that too.

I started working on the blog, our site and reaching out to the Centex HS coaches and next thing you know---it's almost 11:00pm.

I soaked-in a little more information today and more needed...just hope I have enough brain cells left to remember it all.

Thanks to those who responded on anything involving this blog.

I appreciate the information.

Congrats to Jerrells and Lomers

Tentative Lineup, Thursday, July 8th

Here's our tentative schedule for "You Make The Call" with Butch Henry, Paul Catalina and David Smoak on AM1160 ESPN Radio.

Thursday, July 8th:

3:25pm-Gary Baxter, Former Baylor Cornerback
4:25pm-Kim Mulkey, Baylor Women's Basketball Coach
5:25pm-Mickey Spagnola, DallasCowboys.com

Okay, feedback on where I haven't been...

I've been to a lot of great restaurants and sports bars in the Waco area over the past two weeks.

Any suggestions?

I've been to:

Michna's
Tommy B's
George's
Salty Dog
Rudy's

I'd like to have a few more options to help me get fat again.

I think we're having lunch at Double-R sometime soon?

Another successful day...

Just wrapped-up a nice meeting with someone within the BU Alumni Association and soaked in more insight and information.

We have a really nice lineup this afternoon with Belton QB David Ash, a UT commit, Broncos and former BU center J.D. Walton and working on a couple of website writers on BU football.

Tomorrow, we've already lined-up Kim Mulkey, Gary Baxter and Mickey Spagnola.

Man, getting the housing and bank stuff done yesterday has really allowed me to start focusing even more on things we MUST accomplish on 1660ESPN.

Oh, got a call from an old friend who once lived in Tyler and he's invited me to Ridgewood C.C. for a round...and it didn't take long for me to answer, "Yes."

Finally, a place to stay and a bank account...

Well, I spent most of Tuesday trying to finalize a couple of personal things, included a place to stay for the next few months and a local bank.

I found a really nice place on Lakeshore Drive---not a bad drive, in fact it's an enjoyable and relaxing drive.

Our station is going to be moving to Bagby, overlooking Cottonwood Creek Golf Course sometime in late-August or early-September and I looked around that area but feel really good about what I found.

Meanwhile, wrapped-up another show with Butch and Paul and enjoyed the discussion from listeners about Baylor's "Rise Up" campaign to fill up Floyd Casey Stadium.

From all indications, it appears as if there are a variety of either reasons or excuses for the attendance issues.

My feeling comes down to the team winning or having the BU fan-base feel like they can win entering a majority of their games.

I've been contacted by several fans of all ages on their ideas and now I need to do some of my own studying and research to form a better and more educated opinion.

Thanks again for the nice comments and some of the suggestions as well.

Week 3 in Waco...

Returned to Waco tonight, spent some great quality time with some of my teammates at M&M Broadcasting.

There are so many options and opportunities in front of us---it's exciting and hard to fathom...and seriously, we've only just begun.

Not everyone confirmed, but it appears our Tuesday lineup will include, Randy Galloway (FW Star-Telegram, ESPN Radio-Dallas), Gary Baxter (Former BU Cornerback), and John McClain (Houston Chronicle).

Again, I can't thank everyone enough for the first couple of weeks. Hitting the streets with more sponsorship opportunities on Tuesday and trying to maintain, sustain and continue the momentum.

Sunday, July 4th

Cindy, Craig, Jennifer and I are relaxing on the back porch about to cook some ribs, deer sausage, Earl Campbell's sausage, and just picked-up some Johnsonville sausage too.

I shot 76 today at Hollytree C.C. with my buddies, Gene, John, Joe, and Bruce. I was fortunate to shoot even par on the front nine, but didn't sustain the momentum and especially on the par 5 14th and 16th.

I had a great time, but I need to FINISH a round better.

We're about to light the charcoal, light up a nice cigar and enjoy family and the 4th of July.

About to turn the Rangers game on against the White Sox.

Enjoying a quiet Saturday night in Tyler...

Well, started the day fixing a few things up at the office at 1660ESPN, and then met Quan Cosby at his appearance at Salty Dog.

What an absolutely good young man.

There was a large crowd there even before he arrived at noon, and then a bunch of young kids showed up as well.

Salty Dog owner, Randy Crook, was very pleased with the turnout and we'll be working together on some future appearances.

I also saw our co-host Butch Henry at the appearance too.

Meanwhile, I drove back to Tyler after talking with Quan and it's been nice to unwind a little bit.

Just finished cooking a couple of steaks for my wife Cindy and I. She's watching a couple of shows on the Food Network and I'm returning some email and adding to this blog.

Our son Craig and his girlfriend Mandee have been at some friends house watching the Lesnar-Carlin UFC fight...and Craig just called and said Lesnar, "proved himself tonight--coming back from being in big trouble in the first round."

Depending on the weather, I'm hoping to play a round of golf at Hollytree Country Club on Sunday.

Our daughter Jennifer returns from being out of town tomorrow and so we'll have a big evening cooking out, relaxing, and enjoying the time together.

I mentioned this earlier, but we won't be on the air until Tuesday----we're broadcasting an afternoon baseball game and then a Rangers game on Monday evening.

We have a nice lineup working for Tuesday...

Have a great 4th of July weekend.

Wrapping up the second week on 1660ESPN.

I'm here at the desk on a Friday evening returning email, working on next week and ready for a nice holiday weekend.

I hope everyone enjoys their time with family and friends, cooking out, BBQ'ing, playing golf or heading to the Lake.

I'll be heading back to Tyler on Saturday afternoon and then returning with a few more things for the long haul in Waco.

It appears as if I finally found a nice play to stay until we make more concrete decisions on where to live.

I feel good about our first two weeks and my first week on the air with Butch and Paul, but we still have to keep grinding away at some gremlins.

I cannot thank the people around Waco enough for the hospitality in making me feel comfortable these first few days.

I've met some really good people, eaten at some great restaurants, enjoyed some camaraderie at a couple of sports bars...and yes, I'm still trying to figure out who designed the streets in Waco...

Ha, couldn't resist.

I think we made tremendous progress on our commitment to audio-streaming, the website, and podcasts--with a nice announcement coming next week on the online streaming.

I'm headed to eat some pizza with John McClain and some media friends in Waco tonight and then hopefully get in a round or two of golf this weekend.

Enjoy the 4th and please be safe.

Thursday, July 1st:

Just wrapped-up another show with Paul and Butch.

I thought we'd get a little more feedback on the Rangers being put up for auction, but we called an audible and discussed a "Mount Rushmore of College Football Coaches," and had some great feedback.

I think we'll continue that for a segment in each of the next few shows, changing the list each day.

Butch is coming up with the group tomorrow.

I'm also working on Baylor commit, Daingerfield OL/DL Donald Bryant for Friday's show, and Quan Cosby as well. Cosby is doing an autograph signing at Salty Dog, 12:00pm-2:00pm on Saturday. We've also lined-up former Cowboys Player Personnel Director Gil Brandt.

My son and his girlfriend are on their way in from Tyler, looking forward to seeing them. They're on vacation this week--both are also in the radio business. Craig co-hosts an afternoon sports talk show in Tyler, Mandee is a very popular DJ on one of the highest-rated stations in the Tyler/Longview market.

I'm headed back to Tyler for a day or two this holiday weekend to see my wife, Cindy, and our daughter Jennifer is supposed to be back from her workouts in Dallas. She's trying out for the Mavericks Dancers at the end of the month.

And, then-back to Waco sometime on Monday.

I hope you get a chance to drop-in for a little bit on Friday or any weekday between 3:00pm-6:00pm.

I've really, really enjoyed my first few days here in Waco and I think we're slowly but surely getting some things done.
